Flotsam pt.3
October 16, 2009 | Bits and Bobs
Today I shall answer dear Leah’s questions. Leah was my boss at the hostel where I worked when we lived in England. I was super lonely there, and Leah was one of the bright spots. We would spend hours planning vacations. She’s been everywhere. They even rented an RV once and drove all over the Western US. Isn’t that brave and awesome? Operating an RV in a foreign country, when you usually drive a teen Euro car, on the other side of the road? Are you kidding me? I’m so happy that we’re still in touch! Would you PLEASE start a blog already?
Where do you look forward traveling to with Clark, near and distant future?
Oh my gosh, just everywhere. I hope that we can take him all over the world! In the near future, I’m hoping we have a Thailand trip coming up in the fall. Distant? I’m looking forward to a time when he’s interested in museums and taking him to the UK. Not so much art, but history, ruins, castles, stuff like that. I’m so hoping for a nerdy child.
How much of your freezer has been taken over by baby food purees?
Ha! Not much of it, actually. I don’t seem to have the proper storage containers for freezing baby food. (Can anyone recommend any?) I’ve been making a batch of whatever and putting it in individual serving sized bowls with lids in the fridge. At one time, I had a MASSIVE supply of frozen breastmilk, my “Freezer of Feedom” as we called it, but now, he eats so much I can’t seem to get too far ahead.
Have you quietly sneakily worried about where he will go to school yet, or is that thought completely off the radar?
That’s a problem for another day, but I’m hoping we can send him to a Waldorf School. I happen to know several Waldorf educated children and they’re all delightful, inquisitive, artistic sorts. It can be expensive, though, so who knows. It would be super cool if he could go to Waldorf all the way through, but I imagine at some point I would let him choose if he wanted to switch to public school.
How proud are you that your baby is so cute and how capable you have been of capturing every moment? Is there anything about him you wish you could capture on film but cant quite get?
I’m SO proud that he’s so cute! It’s such a crap shoot, right? I know if he wasn’t cute, I would still think he was, but judging by the attention he gets in public, I think he actually *is* cute. I don’t actually capture every moment, though. It’s hard to pay attention to him and photograph him at the same time. I also think that since I’ve been doing more professional sittings, I’m taking fewer pictures of my own kid. I need to take tons more, because if there’s something I’m not getting, it’s his range of expressions. I usually get a smile or the ‘wide open mouth curious face’ or the ‘wide open mouth excited’ face. He also does the most ADORABLE things with his lips, which I can never seem to capture. This reminds me, I need to get on his 7 month post!
Thanks, Leah! XOXO

I used ice cube trays for the purees, then put the cubes in freezer bags after they solidified. Then I could mix and match for meals–one cube sweet potatoes, one cube carrots, etc. And as he started eating more, I just added more cubes.

we’ve got brilliant art galls & museums in Liverpool, come back you wont be lonely. I’m so looking forward to playing host at our house when Clark is 18 and has his own backpack going off traveling on his own on his European adventure. Cant wait to take our 2 to thailand either, just wondering how to get them onto chilli.
Deffo got to use the ice cube trays, its a revelation in combining different flavours and tastes, then see your freezer fill up.
Off to Croatia in 2 days, how European does that sound?
living in your digital world do you take a laptop on holiday with you? I think this sound like a nightmare of a thing to take on your hols but can really see its uses. interested in anyones opinion on that one

I third the use of ice cube trays and freezer bags for baby foods. It’s the only way I’ve ever done it and it made things so easy. I’d spend about 1 hour/ month making a bunch of stuff and we’d be set for quite a while. Good for you!
I love that you’re planning on taking little Clark all around the world. What a lucky little man he is. Hopefully he and Aoife can compare passports one day!

Ice cube trays, then empty into large plastic freezer bags! Easy peasy.

Beth: Brilliant! I knew about the ice cube tray thing, but for some reason, I never heard about the second step with the freezer bags and I was wondering how that worked. ooh! I’m stoked to build up a supply!
Leah: oh! I love the image of my Clarkie going off on his first European adventure and staying at your house! Ditto for Meilin and Woody. Thay can stay with us if they come to explore the US! As for laptops, I don’t bring mine, bu Aaron always has to bring his, because as a contractor, he gets no vacation. It’s not so bad, I don’t think. It just makes it so that his laptop bag is his carryon. Almost everywhere on the planet has wifi these days, even the remote Thai islands we’ve been researching! This post: http://www.crazyauntpurl.com/archives/2009/07/temptation_isla.php by one of my favorite bloggers talks about her tiny computer she brings on trips, if you want to check it out.
Kelly T: OMG, I can’t even begin to describe how fun and satisfying it has been for em to make his baby food! It’s so easy and I feel so good about it! NERD. And yes, the travelling. I hope that my Clark has seen enough of the world by the time he grows up to know how small he is in it, and how lucky he is to be able to see it all.
Kate: Yes! Of course! We are already supporters of the Tacoma Waldorf School. I just said it vaguely like that because who knows where life may have taken us by the time Clark goes to school. If we are still here, that’s definitely where he’ll go, I just hope they have a real school by then.
Jenny M: Yay! I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me. I was all, ice cube trays? Isn’t that kind of uncovered and messy? Ha.

I don’t think it’s a crapshoot if you have two goodlooking parents. It was in the bag from the beginning!

A good place for the ice cube trays is Bed Bath Beyond, they have these trays with silicone bottoms that make it easy to pop the frozen food out. Their tastes do change, so it might not be good to make a TON of any one thing, lest you get stuck with it.
