Sisal can be a bit scratchy, but wool rugs are awesome (both soft and good for allergens, etc.), and if I recall they even have one that you can get made to a custom size. That aside, what recently did for our bedroom was to go to EcoHaus (formerly Environmental Home Center), where we chose a remnant of wool wall-to-wall carpet, which we had cut to our desired dimensions and bound on the edges. It wasn't super cheap, but definitely affordable for a high quality (and eco-friendly) area rug. Two ideas for rug attempt v2:

If you are worried about the competition between the patterns, I would do as suggested above & see if a coffee table breaks it up for you.
