Camp Reunion
September 2, 2008 | FUN!

Over the weekend, SB and I attended the 80th Anniversary Celebration at the summer camp where I worked in college Camp Huston. It’s a very special place for me, and for us, because we were also married there.
Activities included dinner and a camp dance, then much drinking and carrying on, followed by breakfast and a chapel service in the morning. It was SO WONDERFUL to see so many old friends and all of their babies.
We were able to inspect many models of child. Did you know, BOYS ARE DIFFERENT? Seriously, nearly all of my friends have girls, but this weekend we were able to observe several boys in action. They seem a bit harder.

Some of the cabins, and the dining hall up top, where we had our reception:

Dancing!

Anyway, I love my Camp. I have so many great memories of the summers I spent there. Doing the dances and singing the songs this weekend made me giddy to bursting, and even a bit teary at times. That place just holds so much love for me. You know that old 10,000 Maniacs song, These are the days? I believe it was written for Camp Huston.
These are the days
These are days you’ll remember
Never before and never since, I promise
Will the whole world be warm as this
And as you feel it,
You’ll know it’s true
That you are blessed and lucky
It’s true that you
Are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you
These are days that you’ll remember
When May is rushing over you
With desire to be part of the miracles
You see in every hour
You’ll know it’s true
That you are blessed and lucky
It’s true that you are touched
By something that will grow and bloom in you
These are days
These are the days you might fill
With laughter until you break
These days you might feel
A shaft of light
Make its way across your face
And when you do
Then you’ll know how it was meant to be
See the signs and know their meaning
It’s true
Then you’ll know how it was meant to be
Hear the signs and know they’re speaking
To you, to you

Such cool photos. I have great memories of going off to camp too. How great would it be to work there for a whole summer?! I can see why you wanted to go back for the anniversary.

That was my camp’s song, too!! I love camp!

I sang that song at my high school graduation! And as the parent of one of the “models of child” you observed this weekend, I agree that boys are harder. I’m just hoping that what I’ve heard is true and that while boys are harder babies, they are easier teenagers! Liam sure loved SB this weekend–he just wanted to put his hands all over SB’s face. It was really cute!

So fun!
And yes, boys are very different. This I’ve come to learn with two girls and one boy. Not sure harder, just harder in different ways. More throwing and kicking and hitting, but easier in other ways. At least now I understand my brother didn’t hate me when we were kids, he was just being a boy …

Ooh … and I went and checked out the website and saw the new FAMILY CAMP option … very cool. I hope they have it next year, I see that being an EXCELLENT vacation option!

boys are harder is some ways, i.e. more physical, but they are also so very sweet and loving. And they know who their mama is and are so sweet to you!
I use to think I only wanted girls, but Niko is so amazingly tough and tender at the same time.

shelikestotravel: Yes! My camp memories have such a rosy glow! I hope I can make my kids go to camp, and hopefully work at camps, too. I think it’s a great expereince.
Tacoma Friend: Really? It’s not an official Camp Huston song, it just reminds me of camp.
beth c: Your Liam is so yummy. I can’t wait to watch him grow up.
chickadee: Yes! More throwing and kicking and hitting! But like Beth said, perhaps fewer hormonal tantrums as teenagers? And yes! That would be so cool if your family went to family camp! I’m pretty sure they have it every year.
sizzle: I know. It’s to die for.
Victoria: Yes, I still think boys are lovely. I am hoping for one, as you know.
Jesse: I love you too!
