Today’s taste of Hong Kong comes to you in the form of interesting signage.
When we first arrived, straight from the airport, when we went to call up to be let in, we saw this:

Isn’t that funny? I guess it’s a SARS thing, as is this in the subway:

There were all kinds of cute signs in the subway, including this one of Chinese New Year rats recycling:

…and this cute one that I took for J&T. If you’ve heard J’s rendition of, “Handrail For Safety,” a little ditty composed for his toddling daughter, you can fully appreciate this photo.

As I’m sure you remember, Hong Kong belonged to England until 1997, so there are some charming Brittish leftovers scattered about:

I hope you find signage as interesting as I do. Stay tuned! In the next installment of Hong Kong adventures, I get 9 stamps in my passport.
Awesome post. I’m totally with you on the interestingness of signage. Funny ones, of course, like the spitting dude and the one-armed guy totally hurling himself into the gap between the train and the platform, but also just interesting (and often elegant) depictions of sometimes-complex ideas. Which makes me wonder, who are these people that design signs, and how do I get that job?
LOVE it!
Hey, I can’t wait for the next post! Keep ‘em coming. It is so fun to relive all of our/your adventures this way. Not to mention seeing our everyday world through someone elses lens.
Jamie: Totally! Have you by any chance seen the ones by the Seattle Center that are absolutely hilarious? I think they are a ‘watch for pedestrians’ type thing but the stick figure of the person being hit by the car, arms a-flapping, and breifcase flying, looks more like “watch out for musical theater here”.
chickadee: yay!
hliv: Your everyday world is cool and truppy and post worthy! I think I have at least another 4 or 5 HK posts in me.
I’m still creeping my way through your entertaining blog. I get a kick out of unusual signs and packaging too. These are genius.
