New York City, more

One day, SB and I headed into the City with the express purpose of wandering around and taking pictures. We thought we might see a show later that night so, we headed to Times Square to check out tkts.

We just happened to be passing through when all of a sudden, humans for miles around were all facing the same direction, aiming cameras and cell phones into the sky. We turned around, and there, way up high, they were practicing the ball drop. Sweet! Isn’t it smaller than you thought it was?

I even caught this cabbie photographing while driving.

Have I mentioned I love my new camera? I don’t know enough about it to understand why, but check out this random picture of SB. See how it looks PROFESSIONAL? How the background is all blurry and artsy, but he in focus? This is an example of the sort of thing my new camera does by accident and my old camera could never do. (Wait, did I say by accident? I mean, by my photographic skillz, clearly.)

We wandered down to Bryant Park and the New York Public Library and I snapped these…

Then I wanted to explore the Greenwich Village and Soho area, so we just kept on walking. Once there, we were suddenly a bit peckish and by accident we ended up at The Cupping Room which is apparently a reknowned New York City brunch establishment. Yay us! It was warm and cozy and super packed in with glamorous New York people eating brunch in Soho, having delicious conversations upon which we could easily eavesdrop.

Afterwards, SB went to meet some actor friends and I went back to tkts to get in line for the evening show tickets. On the way….look! It’s Jennifer Garner!

She was totally mobbed, obviously, so I was unable to inform her that I think we would make excellent friends. (Was there ever a better show than Alias? Ass-kicking in hot outfits?)

The line was super long, but I didn’t mind because of course I made pals with all the folks around me. By the time I got to the front, the choices were limited. They were all ALL OUT of musicals. I was secretly relieved, though, because then I could choose to see my girl Jen and KEVIN KLINE in Cyrano de Bergerac with no regrets!

It’s only a 10 week run so we were really lucky to be there to see it. KEVIN KLINE! It feels so strange and old-timey to see movie stars in a play. You’re reminded that they’re really just performers, you know? Jennifer was delightful and lovely, and while there isn’t much one can do with the role of Roxanne besides be pretty, she had excellent comic timing and sparklingly clear diction. And Kevin was just incredible. I felt honored to be entertained by him, as weird as that sounds.

Do you know who else was in it? Chris Sarandon, PRINCE HUMPERDINK from the Princess Bride! And he was using that same voice! (Can you hear it? “She was once a commoner like yourselves. Perhaps you will not find her so common…now. I give you… Princess Buttahcup.”)

Part of the fun of live theater is getting to see them not be perfect. Poor Jen actually FELL on stage. She fell very gracefully, sort of collapsed into a poof made of her huge dress. Nothing was inprov-ed, Prince Humperdink just helped her up and they continued on. Then, later in the same scene, she had just delivered some big line and was making her grand exit up a staircase when her stole caught on the banister and she had to stop and untangle it before she could flee. Ah…live theater.

It was a great night of entertainment, all at half price. Man. Can you imagine being able to see stuff like that whenever you wished?

Gah, someday I’ll get there! I heart all the actors in the play you saw, and it sounds fabulous. I will take live theater over the movies any day. I am in agreement with you…”Can you imagine being able to see stuff like that whenever you wished?” I was just have a great discussion with a lovely young man about the organic quality of the theatah, how it can be so much fun when things go wrong (untimely sound cue, lights go out, someone falls, forgotten lines)and it’s a fun challenge to make it all believable.

  2. Tacoma Friend says:

I am soooo jealous, what an awesome show!! Can’t wait to hear more about the trip. – K

  3. Constance says:

Those pictures are soooooooo great. Yes, I definitely thought the ball was bigger. Like, I don’t know. But BIG!

  4. Dar says:

Hey Jenny, great pix with your new camera!

Kevin Kline you say? Love him. Jennifer Garner in best TV show ever? Um, hyperbole I know, but

    The Riches

Come on! (Just got DVD of Season 1)

  5. Rona says:

Do you remember who played the flower girl (she flirts with Cyrano at the end of the opening scene)? That was my first role in the Lutedome, and I remember it with great affection. I’ll want to hear more about it all, of course, when we next meet! XO.

  6. Jill says:

Yay, NY pics! Don’t you just love the D40? I love the shot of Aaron on the street. So crisp. It sounds like you two had a really, really great time. I’m so glad! I love visiting NY and now I’ve got the itch to go again.

OH – and the pizza caper!?! So crazy. Who are these people that steal pizzas? I bet it was not the first time they’ve done that.

  7. Super fun, Jenny! You went to the library, the theatre, AND saw Sydney Bristow all in 1 day?!?! Holey-majoley, am I jealous! I go back to NYC in 3 weeks, so maybe I can catch her then. Not that seeing Kevin Kline–live!–wasn’t super cool, it’s just that he’s never kicked so much ass in 4-inch boots and a pleather dress.

  8. Jenny Myers says:

Screaming with jealousy. How wonderful it all sounds. What did you do with Freya? Kevin is madly in love with JG, well, me too. If you manage to find a bar called Don’t Tell Mamma, you’d probably like it :)

  9. Peter says:

Did you know Maryl Streep saw Kevin Kline in the stage production of Pirates of Penzance and knew he’d be perfect to play Nathan in Sophie’s Choice? You are uber-lucky to have seen him live – and in that role! Perfect for him.

Miss you, love you, come visit sometime if you get the time…

  10. Noreen says:

Ooh, I love the accounting of your fabulous adventures. It would be super fun to adventure in NYC together sometime with you. I suspect that could happen one day. Your hubby and I have been there together sans better halves. It would be a blast all together. And, I thought the same thing about the ball last year, but did not have a kick-butt camera to catch it with. I steal your memory now, I think. And now to your amazing theatre trip. Oh, how I would love to see those actors in that show. Amazing. I am a big Jen Garner fan. I saw her on Martha one day talking about the show, and life and her baby. I feel like we are friends. She most certainly belongs on your fridge of fabulous mamas.

  11. Now Princess Bride references … THOSE I GET! :)

  12. Jenny says:

Camille: I so totally agree. Live theater is the best.

Tacoma Friend: Yes! I need to hear about yours!

Constance: Thanks, love. I wish I could come over to your house and practice on your many children.

Dar: Hi sweetheart! Yes, I should say, Alias was a kickass show, but it;s distressing lack of Eddie Izzard makes it ultimately sub par.

Rona: no clue. But I knew you would be excited we got to see KK!

Jill: You should definitely go to NYC for a photo safari!

lizzie: I know! Oh how I loved that show.

Jenny: Hi there! Thanks for commenting. I have been reading your blog, too. :) Freya was house sat by Officer Sister who not only picked up her poop from the yard, she even took her to the dog park.

Peter: HI HI HI! Long time no see! Expect an email shortly. I am dying to know what’s up with you!

Noreen: Yes she does, though I have yet to find a picture of her where she looks properly inspiring with Violet. She usually looks just like a mom. Which rules! But is not the intent of my collection. And I would LOVE to hang out in NYC with you. It will definitely happen when you guys move there!

chickadee: Yes! Maybe I should have titled the blog Life IS Pain Princess or Anybody Wanna Peanut?
