Weekend Update
November 26, 2007 | FUN!
On Wednesday morning, our new table was delivered. We’ve been wanting a big giant table (for projects! and play readings! and festive holiday centerpieces!) and this year we hosted Thanksgiving, so we reasoned it was time to make the super grown-up and astonishingly expensive purchase.

We are pleased.
By day’s end, the turkey was stuffed, the salads made, and the table was set. (Don’t mind the vampire dude left over from Halloween. He was finally returned that night) This was the first ever use of our wedding china. The plates still had price stickers on the bottom. Doesn’t it look cozy and nice, though? (minus the vampire) Playing Martha is WAY fun.

That evening we got some sad news. My mother and sister in law decided not to come over from Yakima for Thanksgiving. (SB’s mom just had surgery, she’s fine, just not up for the journey.) It was sad because SB was really looking forward to it, plus it was our first Thanksgiving at our house, plus we just bought this bigass table…
But when the last guest left on Thursday night, we suddenly found ourselves with THREE WHOLE DAYS. Three delicious days of no plans, no houseguests, nothing.
Friday was a fabulously lazy day of whatever we felt like around the house, with an afternoon tromp through the woods with the dog at Pt. Defiance.

Saturday morning, we had coffee, baked goods, and newspapers in the perfect seats next to the fire at the Mandolin. On Saturday mornings, the cutest teenaged boy plays the piano there. His grandparents sit nearby and usually start the round of distracted clapping after each piece. This time, there was a girl there to watch him and I eavesdropped as they awkwardly flirted until eventually, she was sitting next to him on the piano bench. He’s nerdy and adorable and the music makes him bolder, I think. I marveled at his ability to flirt and play at the same time and wished I could videotape him, so that one day when my kid complains about piano lessons, I could show him the tape as evidence that he too could one day have such a way with the ladies.
Even though I would normally say it was too early, saturday afternoon we found ourselves with the time and the inclination to go get a christmas tree.
****gratuitous Prius shot****

When we got home, I bossed my dear, sweet, husband into getting the Christmas rubbermaids out of the garage. He was very nice and complied, but on the way up the walk, he dropped one of them, and thus he stole away one of my greatest joys in all of life. I take a supremely dorky amount of pride in the careful and organized packing of the Christmas decorations. I was literally giddy, anticipating cranking up the Christmas music and unwrapping each sparkly bit of it. Whimpering quietly, I collected my pretties from where they had scattered, assessed the damage (one Santa had lost an arm), and carried the sadly disheveled collection inside.

But then I recovered. And holiday cheer was spread!

Sunday started out with a satisfying breakfast at PSP with Jesse and Mike, followed by the SCORE of not one but TWO Beautiful Angles. It was a good day!

Sunday afternoon and evening I was a busy busy bee. Because there is nothing more satisfying than a list with everything crossed off and because I love lists so much I think I would find the lists of others interesting, I give you my Sunday Afternoon List:
Take Freya to Dogparkwash carput up outside christmas lightsdo laundrydo disheschange sheetsmake Monday’s lunchset out outfits for the weekmake/send late B-day card to Bethextended grooming
It was a fabulous, relaxing, and productive weekend. I’m very thankful for this time in our lives.

This post made me smile. Many times. Many needed times. If you’d like a return on this investment, ring me one of this weekends and I’ll tell you about how my aunt put her butt (ok, back, but butt sounds better) through my parents’ wall on Thanksgiving, creating a 2-1/2 foot high hole my husband got to drywall the next day. And did I mention said hole is at eye-level? We have video tape …
And now back to my NaNoWriMo-ing. Thanks for the distraction. As if the kids weren’t enough distraction, trying to get them into bed while hubby is out … you go and point a grand, bright, shiny new splendiferous post. Thanks. Don’t count the words, I know I know … back to my writing … gotta catch up with the mouseketeer …

Sorry SB didnt get to show off his new table to his mom and sis. I hope she has a speedy recovery.
Glad you had some free time to do more domestic goddessy things and get your tree up. G&S put up some outdoor lights but we’ll put our tree up later.
BTW, I’ve introed 3 new members on my Eddie yahoo grp to your blog and the Eddie post!

That’s the biggest table I’ve ever seen, and beautiful to boot! What a festive home you have put together, Ms. Martha.
I’m inspired to decorate, though it’s odd this time of year to have fake snow and palm trees everywhere. Somehow, it’s just not the same.

chickadee: I want to hear that story! I’m glad I made you smile.
Tacoma Friend: Doesn’t it? It was like a little vacation to have three whole days of no plans.
Dar: Hmm… what did *I* make? Not much really. I helped my mom do everything though, and I took copious notes so that theorhetically I could do it on my own now. The only real guest that was there outside of my immediate family and my sister’s BF was SB’s aunt Maryanne who brought a really awesome oyster dish. – Thanks for telling your group about my Eddie post! It got one new nice comment the other day.
Heather: Your comment makes MY stomach hurt. I miss YOU so much. Oh to be on the couch with a blanket and a snuggle and a trash magazine… I’m glad you liked the play by play post.
dahli: Yes! Me too! I know you understand the joy in a good centerpiece.
Camille: Oh, you poor thing.

Jenny, where to start. 1)Table is perfect. Love it and the Thanksgiving table all adorned. 2) you and Freya all outdoorsy – so cute! 3)Great shot of your computer showing zesty and AJ in the background. Nice one. 4) Thank you for the gratuitous Prius shot because i LOVE that car and the fact that it’s not even December yet and you have your Christmas tree. 5) i love lists and crossing things off of them. we need to talk.
Finally, are you coming down to DC after NYC? We would be soooo thrilled….

Jill: Hi!
1. Thank you. I love my table, too. I feel like it has changed my house. I can’t wait to have a proper dinner party.
2. Thanks! She is so happy in the woods. She holds her tail up all curly and prances about.
3. Thanks, photography appreciating friend! BTW, I am loving your Paris photos. I haven’t made my way all the way through them, but I am savoring each one. Comments to come!
4. You’re welcome! I know we are way too early with the xmas tree, but like I said, it was more about ramdomly having the time and the desire and pouncing on it. I love it some much though. I’m happy to be ablt to appreciate it’s cheery glow for longer.
5. Lists are the elixer of life.
DC VISIT: Umm… I don’t know? We thought you guys were going to be in Florida. Are you going to be back? I’m sort of thinking that it may be too much to cram into that trip now, and it would be torturous to have such a short time with you guys. I want to plan a proper longer visit in the spring, I think.

[...] We got some pretty good loot, but we were fairly restrained I think. We brought home a bunch of art including a huge painting that SB fell in love with of three monks, (which I assured him will cost a billion dollars to frame properly, but he swears he won’t argue) and also smaller paintings as well, of pretty birds and flowers that we’ve given out as gifts. I found a BEAUTIFUL table runner that actually fits our bigass table that is navy with gold designs, and some rad reproductions of vintage Chinese ads that I have to find a place for. [...]
